Podcast Pick of the Day - Security Now!
WEP Insecurity
Run Time: 45:54
Hosted by Leo Laporte and Steve Gibson, Security Now is a weekly podcast discussing the latest in computer security. This episode featured WEP (Wired Equivalent Privacy) and how German researchers have been able to crack it. The researchers published a paper revealing how WEP can now be cracked in under a minute. What took 5 million packets before to crack, now only takes forty thousand (1,000 times faster). It’s almost faster now to crack a WEP key than it would be to type it. The code has been made available, and it probably won’t be long before it’s implemented in security cracking software.
Gibson quotes the following numbers:
- 25% of wireless networks have no protection
- 50% of wireless networks use WEP
- 25% of wireless networks use WPA (WiFi Protected Access)
Therefore, only 25% of wireless networks are “uncrackable” (only through a brute force attack).
Gibson delves into technology behind the WEP crack. It’s a fairly technical discussion, but it’s pretty amazing if you can follow how the researchers managed to crack the original WiFi security. Gibson gives alternative WiFi security measures, such as WPA, VPN and HTTPS.

Podcast Pick of the Day - Cranky Geeks
Episode 58
Run Time: 30:38
Hosted by Marketwatch and PC Magazine columnist John C. Dvorak, Cranky Geeks is a weekly podcast discussing the latest tech news. In addition to the head crank, editorial director of PCMagCast.com Sebastian Rupley, the rectangular table includes Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia and Mark Ranalli, CEO of Helium.com. The discussion touches on SONY BMG making it a employee requirement to blog, death threats against a female U.K. blogger, models of user generated content and what can and cannot be trusted, the demise of print media, and different competing versions of Wikipedia.
In addition, Mark describes how Helium offers the chance of an author’s work being read based on the quality of the work. Authors compete by writing essays on the same topic, and the best essays share a portion of the revenue. The three factors going into the revenue stream are: the quality of the article, the sum of interest of the subject and the value to the sponsor.
Wales provides excellent insight into Wikipedia, which now boasts 1.75 million articles in English, and has articles in 125 languages. He admits one of the biggest problems facing Wikipedia is the live editing of articles.

War on Drugs Hasn't Stemmed Flow Into U.S.
Run Time: 13:16
NPR: Story of the day delivers “the one thing NPR editors think you won’t want to miss.” NPR has embarked on a series of podcasts focusing on the U.S. war on drugs, the “Forgotten War” as they refer to it, and what accomplishments have been made since President Nixon declared dangerous drugs as public enemy number one. In 2004, thirty-one thousand people died of drug abuse. The NPR reporters follow federal drug enforcement agents surveying the Caribbean from a E3 turbo prop, talk to the former head of the DEA about drug trafficking, how killing drug cartel heads has made little difference, and how drugs are still relatively cheap now. Many interviews are conducted with drug experts, and many sides of how to win the war are presented.

The website can serve as a supplement for a television show or substitute for watching that television show. Recaps also provide commentary, and give the recaps a personality and life of their own. The Bravo Network, owned by NBC, recently purchased the website. Some concern has been raised if what made the website so popular will be lost by "corporate" control. Enjoy.

Science Friday
Michael Pollan - The Omnivore's Dilemma (April 14, 2006)
Run Time: 37:25
Hosted by Ira Flatow, Science Friday is a weekly podcast featuring the latest news and trends in science. This podcast is my favorite single podcast from 2006. It featured Michael Pollan, author of the Omnivore’s Dilemma. It’s an eye-opening podcast focusing how the eating habits of most Americans have turned from good to bad in the past half century, and how the food industry is mostly responsible for that change.
Some facts from the podcast:
- A prominent fast food chain's soda is 100% corn-based carbon
- The same fast food chain's burgers are 56% corn-based carbon
- 1 bushel is 56 pounds of corn kernels
- 1/3 gallon of fossil fuel required to grow 1 bushel of corn
- America grows 10 billion bushels of corn/year - roughly 3.3 billion gallons of fossil fuel used to accomplish this growth
- 20% of fossil fuel consumption in America goes to feeding humans
- 80% of food for human consumption in Iowa is imported
- 56 calories of fossil fuel to move 1 calorie of organic lettuce from California to New York
Words cannot do the podcast justice in its scope and depth regarding corn overuse, fossil fuel consumption for agriculture, politics in agriculture, water pollution from nitrates from the overuse of cornfield fertilizers, hidden fossil fuels use in organic agriculture and many other points. He does provide solutions to some of the problems and cites examples of farms that have taken steps to get back to basics and really get a free lunch out of nature.
The podcast can be found on the Science Friday homepage in the Archives section. Select April and choose the April 14, 2006: Hour Two link. From there, choose the Michael Pollan mp3 download on the right side of the page.

Podcast Pick of the Day - What's New Now
Feb 1, 2007
Run Time: 49:50
Hosted by Jim Louderback, What's New Now focuses on the new and hottest trends in technology. This episode featured Vista (who hasn't covered it), Michael Dell is back as CEO of DELL, new Intel 45nm chips, California might ban the standard incandescent light bulb, new backlight on Mac Powerbooks, Verizon wireless, YouTube to pay contributors(?), DVD playback on the 360.
My favorite part of the episode was the argument between Patrick Norton and Roger Chang regarding the incandescent light bulb: whether it should be removed from the shelves in all California stores, or still be stocked and give the consumer a tax break for buying more energy efficient light bulbs. It starts at the 20 minute mark, and it was quite enjoyable and informative. Enjoy.
The podcast can be found on iTunes.

Podcasts Picks of the Day - NOVA PBS and The Math Factor
Polar Cold
Run Time: 3:50
The Math Factor
We Don't Know the Way Out!
Run Time: 4:06
I decided to post two podcasts today, both of which pit the listener in two different places. One is real, the other imaginary. And both daunting.
Polar Cold focuses on polar adventurer Benedict Allen and his description of how extreme cold infilitrates the body and its subsequent physical and mental effects.
The Math Factor poses a spatial question on how a person trapped in a 50ft by 50ft by 50ft box suspended 100 feet in the air by stilts can escape with only a knife and two 50 foot ropes suspended from the ceiling. The room has one window with a hook at the base of the floor. I know: cut both ropes, tie them together, then lower yourself out. One caveat: you cannot survive a fall of more than ten feet. Enjoy.

Podcast Pick of the Day - Digital Life TV
Episode 130
Run Time: 51:54
Hosted by tech aficionados Patrick Norton and Robert Herron, Digital Life TV (or DLTV) presents the newest and hottest trends, topics and gadgets in technology twice a week. This week they are at CES (Consumer Electronic Show) in Las Vegas, Nevada. This podcast is from day three of the show and featrues 40 new tech items such as protective cases for iPods, the iPhone, new HD TVs, the world's tiniest projector and a lot more.
Robert Herron is a HDTV guru, and his pick of the the best in show television got me researching. He said the SONY OLED TV possessed the best picture quality. OLED stands for Organic Light-Emitting Diode. The telvsions are ultra slim (width of 10mm or less) and have an insane contrast ratio of 1,000,000:1. The televisons require no backlighting and are literally paper thin. Unfortuantely, they're still in the prototype stage, but show where the ultra slim, ultra high resolution technology is heading. Enjoy.
