Tornado wind speed calculations have advanced tremendously in the past 150 years, from Elias Lewis' tests of firing chickens from cannons in 1842 to measuring debris distance caught on film in the 1970s to doppler radar. The first tornado to be captured on film from start to finish was the Union City Tornado in Oklahoma in 1973. The four tornado stages were named: the organizing stage, the mature stage, the shrinking stage and the decaying stage.
